Sun damage starts early, establishing itself when we’re young. From there, the damage manifests itself with more obvious signs like spots, wrinkles, dry skin, and moles. Your tan may have looked great ten years ago, but now you’re wondering if this damage is something you can reverse.
UV damage is behind almost 80% of your skin’s aging. There is no way to erase all of the damage, but there are certainly products, prevention tips, and procedures that can help you alleviate the effects and prevent further damage.
Prevention
The best way to deal with the sun’s harmful rays is to prevent damage in the first place. We recommend a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to finish off your skincare routine each morning. On a day where you know that you’ll be towelling off frequently or swimming, we suggest reapplying frequently to make sure your face isn’t going unprotected.
Our favourite broad spectrum sunscreen is from the AlumierMD Sun Protection line. AlumierMD offers an innovative range of 100% physical, broad spectrum sunscreens. Each formula protects the skin from the sun’s harmful rays while also keeping your skincare goals in mind.
Work to avoid sun exposure during the peak hours of the day. If this is unavoidable, bring a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses to minimize any further exposure.
Topical Products
There are a number of products that you can include in your skincare routine that will help boost skin regeneration and erase some of the sun damage from your skin.
Using topical retinoids is a good addition as they work to increase epidermal cell turnover, improving skin texture. Creams that include vitamin C can help stop damage before it even happens. Use in the morning before applying sunscreen, or at night before bed. Finally, alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs can help to reduce hyperpigmentation when used in the evening.
In-Clinic Procedures
There are procedures performed by our trained technician at Pennylane Dermal Solutions that can help to boost skin regeneration and improve skin texture. Chemical peels can work to reduce hyperpigmentation, precancerous lesions, and fine lines as the outermost layer of skin is removed. This allows clean skin to come to the surface, minimizing the damage caused by the sun.
Microneedling uses an innovative device called the DermaStamp that creates tiny abrasions across the surface of your skin. This triggers a natural immune response and boost collagen production, tightening the appearance of your skin and providing anti-aging benefits.
Both procedures require minimal downtime, but there is a healing process that must be completed by every client. You will be given an aftercare protocol that will teach you how to keep your skin safe.
